How the treadmill steps calculator works

Your stride length is estimated from your height: about 41.3% of height for women and 41.5% for men. The calculator multiplies your speed by your time to get distance, then divides that distance by your stride to estimate steps.

Calories use the American College of Sports Medicine walking and running equations, which account for speed, incline and body weight. Incline changes calories, not the step estimate.

Steps per mile by height

Taller people take longer strides, so they need fewer steps to cover a mile.

Treadmill steps FAQ

How many steps is a mile on a treadmill?

For most adults, between about 2,000 and 2,600 steps. It depends mainly on your height: a 5’4″ woman averages about 2,400 steps per mile, and a 6’0″ man about 2,100.

Do treadmill steps count the same as walking outside?

Yes. A step is a step. Treadmill walking can feel slightly easier because there’s no wind or uneven ground, which is why many people set a 1% incline to match outdoor effort.

How long does it take to walk 10,000 steps on a treadmill?

At 3 mph, most people reach 10,000 steps in about 75 to 95 minutes, depending on height. Enter your details above to see your own time.

Why doesn’t my fitness tracker match the calculator?

Wrist trackers count arm swings, and holding the treadmill rails stops them counting. The calculator estimates from distance and stride, so the two numbers often differ a little.

Does this calculator work for a walking pad?

Yes. A walking pad is a compact treadmill, so the math is the same. Enter your walking pad speed in mph and your walking time, and the calculator estimates your steps, distance and calories.

Does incline change my step count?

Only slightly, since stride shortens a little on steep inclines. Incline has a much bigger effect on calories, which the calculator includes when you enter it.
