Activity to Steps Calculator
Swam laps, did Pilates or went to spin class? Turn any workout into equivalent walking steps for your step goal or work step challenge. Add as many activities as you like to see your total for the day.
Minutes help us work out your pace. If you leave minutes blank, we’ll estimate your time from the effort you picked.
These are estimates based on how hard each activity works your body compared with walking. They are not actual steps. Check your step challenge’s rules to see if converted steps count.
How we convert activities to steps
Swimming, cycling and Pilates don’t create steps, so your watch can’t count them. What we can compare is effort. Every activity has a MET score from the Compendium of Physical Activities, the research list scientists use to measure how hard an activity is. A brisk walk scores about 3.5 METs, and a typical walker takes about 105 steps a minute at that pace.
So we ask: if you had spent the same energy walking, how many steps would that be? The formula is minutes × 105 × (activity MET ÷ 3.5). Thirty minutes of moderate lap swimming (7 METs) works twice as hard as a brisk walk, so it comes to about 6,300 steps.

Swimming to steps
Swimming is one of the most common activities people want to convert, because it’s a full-body workout that your step count completely misses. A relaxed 30-minute swim is worth about 5,400 steps, and 30 minutes of steady laps is about 6,300. If you swim hard for an hour, you can cover your whole 10,000-step goal and then some.
If you count laps, tap “Counted laps?” in the calculator and add your pool length and number of laps. We’ll work out your distance and pace per 100 meters, and use your pace to pick the right effort level, so your result is more exact. Most US gym pools are 25 yards, and Olympic pools are 50 meters.
Frequently asked questions
How many steps is 1 hour of swimming?
About 10,800 steps for relaxed swimming and around 12,600 for moderate laps. Vigorous laps come to more than 17,000.
What’s the equivalent of 10,000 steps in swimming?
Roughly 48 minutes of moderate lap swimming, or 55 minutes of leisurely swimming.
Does swimming count as steps on my Apple Watch or Fitbit?
No. Watches track swimming as a workout, with active minutes and calories, but they don’t add steps. That’s why many workplace step challenges let you convert workouts with a chart or calculator like this one.
How many steps is 30 minutes of Pilates?
About 2,700 steps. Pilates builds strength and core stability more than it raises your heart rate, so it converts to fewer steps than cardio, but it’s still worth counting.
Are converted steps the same as real steps?
Not exactly. They are an estimate of equal effort, not movement. They’re a fair way to get credit for workouts that don’t involve walking.
