I Switched to Keto Granola and It Changed How I Snack
For years, I thought granola was one of those foods that automatically made breakfast healthy. Put some on Greek yogurt, add fruit, maybe a little peanut butter, and I felt like I was making a very responsible breakfast choice. And I would also munch on it as a snack.
And by “snack,” I mean 5 or 6 portions after I had already told myself, Okay, this is my last one. LOL. Then I started eating low-carb. And I finally started looking at the nutrition label.
That was when I realized my beloved granola could contain a lot of carbs and sugar for something I was constantly reaching for.
Why I Started Looking for Keto Granola
I wanted to get off my ADHD medication, and one of the holistic approaches I found helpful for managing ADHD was following a keto or lower-carb way of eating. So I started paying much more attention to the foods I was eating regularly.
With keto, I can only eat 20 grams of carbs per day. Not per meal. Per day! Suddenly, that innocent little handful of granola was looking very different.
Granola was an easy one to overlook because it has such a healthy reputation. You see words like oats, nuts, honey, seeds and ancient grains on the bag, and it sounds wholesome. But regular granola can be surprisingly high in carbohydrates and sugar. Some popular granolas have around 30 to 40+ grams of carbohydrates per serving, with some containing 10, 15 or even 20 grams of sugar.
And here’s the part that really got me: the serving size. A serving might be ½ cup or ⅔ cup, but I definitely wasn’t pulling out a measuring cup every time I made yogurt Or every time I was “snacking.”
Why Keto Granola Works Better for Me
Keto granola is usually made differently from traditional oat-based granola. Instead of relying heavily on oats, many keto granolas use ingredients like:
- Almonds
- Pecans
- Coconut
- Pumpkin seeds
- Sunflower seeds
- Chia seeds
- Flax seeds
- Low-carb sweeteners instead of sugar
That gives me the crunchy granola experience I actually want without using up a huge chunk of my daily carb allowance. And honestly, I don’t miss the oats that much. The nuts and seeds give keto granola a really satisfying crunch, so I’m still able to snack on something crunchy without reaching for a bag of regular granola.
My Favorite Ways to Eat Keto Granola
My current lazy-girl breakfast is ridiculously simple. Sometimes I eat keto granola almost like cereal with almond milk. Other times it’s: Unsweetened Greek yogurt + keto granola + a little monk fruit sweetener. That’s it.
Sometimes I’ll add berries or another low-carb topping, depending on what I’m eating that day. I also try to be careful with the low carb granola, nuts and seeds are nutritious, but they can also be very calorie-dense. The fact that something is labeled “keto” or “low carb” doesn’t mean I can pour half the bag into my bowl (not that I have ever done that before 🫣).
The Keto Granola Brands I Buy
I do not make my own granola. You can. I’ve seen the homemade keto granola recipes on YouTube. They always look beautiful. The ingredients are lined up perfectly, someone is calmly mixing everything in a bowl, and the finished granola is sitting there looking like it belongs in a magazine.
I may not have the patience but one thing I have is Amazon Prime so I buy mine.
When I’m choosing a keto granola, I look at the total carbs, fiber, added sugar, ingredients and serving size rather than just trusting the word “keto” on the front of the bag.
NuTrail Keto Granola
NuTrail is my go-to.
It has several nut-based flavors and is specifically made for low-carb and keto eating.

So, Is Regular Granola Really That Bad?
Honestly? No.
I’m not anti-regular granola now, and I’m definitely not going to pretend that regular granola is going to ruin my life. 😂 I’m also not super strict with keto all the time. Keto is how I generally choose to eat because it works for me, but I’m still going to live my life. If I’m traveling and I order a yogurt parfait and it comes with regular granola, I’m going to eat it.
I’m not picking it out one tiny piece at a time. Usually, it’s not even that much granola anyway. It’s an add-on or a small topping, not an entire bag sitting in my pantry. The difference for me is that I don’t keep it in the house anymore.
Because I know myself.
I’m not going to eat one serving and neatly put the bag away. I’m going to have one serving, then another, then convince myself that this one is definitely my last one. And suddenly my “healthy snack” has turned into 5 or 6 servings. 😂 So no, I don’t think regular granola is inherently bad.
I just know that keto granola works better for me. It lets me have the crunch I love, without using up a huge chunk of my daily carb allowance, and without me having to pretend I have the self-control to casually eat one tablespoon of regular granola and walk away. That is the swap that works for me.
