If you’ve never had Botox injections done before — or if it’s been a while since your last treatment session — you may be wondering what to expect before and after your appointment.
Preparing for Your Botox Treatment
There are a few steps you can take before your Botox treatment session to maximize your results and minimize the possibility of complications. First, it is recommended that you schedule your treatment at least two weeks in advance of any special events (weddings, vacations, etc.).
From there, clients should discontinue use of the following three days to one week before treatment:
- aspirin
- Motrin
- Ginkgo biloba
- garlic
- flax oil
- cod liver oil
- vitamin A
- vitamin E
- other essential fatty acids
The reason for discontinuing these is to minimize the risk of any bruising or bleeding during your treatment. Of course, you should always speak with your physician before you discontinue any medication.
Likewise, avoid Retin-A, alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes, and high-sugar/high-sodium foods in the days leading up to your treatment. These can otherwise increase your risk of irritation, redness, bruising, and swelling.
Finally, if you develop a rash, blemish, or cold sore in the area you will have treated with Botox before your appointment, you should call the Ideal Image office to have your treatment rescheduled, as it is not advised to treat inflamed or broken skin. The same applies if you fall ill with cold or flu-like symptoms. Your treatment can be completed once your ailment is resolved.
Botox Treatment Aftercare
Now that you know what to do (and not to do) in the days leading up to your Botox treatment, what aftercare tips should you follow after your appointment?
One of the most important things to remember is to continue avoiding the items from the above lists (including aspirin, Motrin, alcohol, caffeine, etc.) for a few days to one week after treatment.
Immediately following your appointment, you’ll also want to avoid any vigorous exercise or heavy lifting/straining. These activities can increase circulation to the treatment areas, which could cause the injection to shift or move. Likewise, you should keep your head elevated and avoid touching the treated areas for at least four hours after your appointment.
Makeup should also be avoided until the day after your treatment; this will prevent pustules from forming. If you plan on having any additional cosmetic treatments done (such as Dysport), be sure to schedule these for at least two weeks after your Botox injections.
Most people who have Botox injections done require no recovery time and begin seeing their results within just a few days. Still, it’s important to report any pain, swelling, redness, itching, or blisters to your provider right away.
While it is rare for any immediate touchups to be needed after Botox injections, these should be performed within two weeks of the initial treatment, if applicable. Not sure if you need a touchup? Ideal Image’s expert team would be happy to review your results with you and determine whether you might benefit from one.
