Baghunter, a website dedicated to luxury online retail, did a study comparing gold, the S&P 500 (an American stock market index), and the Hermès Birkin bag over the past 35 years. The shocker? The pricy Hermès bag favored by celebrities, which comes with a years-long waiting list, increased in value at an average of 14.2 percent a year. That adds up to an increase of more than 500 percent in that time period.
Unlike the stock market or gold, Birkin bags don’t have a bad year — in 35 years, the value has never decreased. So the next time your parents want to talk to you about making a smart investment, you might want to mention an Hermes bag.
